The Scratching Post

The Scratching post is a non-profit, no kill shelter for stray and abandoned cats. Located in Silverton, Ohio (a Cincinnati suburb), the shelter has been in operation since May of 1990. We are able to find homes for about 250 cats per year. We can house about 130 at a time and are usually
at full capacity. A cat can only be accepted if we have the space, which since we are a no-kill shelter, means only if we’ve had an adoption. There are thousands each year we have to turn away. The only way to reduce this number is by spaying & neutering every cat possible until there are homes for them all.

Every animal admitted to the shelter is seen by a veterinarian and tested for feline leukemia and FIV. Once a cat has been vaccinated, spayed/neutered and has passed a health screening they enter the general population and they enter the general population and enter one of the 13 cat dens. Cats are spayed or neutered at 2 pounds and those that are too young to be spayed/neutered are confined to the kitten room.

The Scratching Post is celebrating our 20th year in operation this year. We’ve helped over 7,000 cats. We are a no-kill, non-profit facility. All of our operating funds are provided by donations. Our major fund raiser is a silent auction of donated items. The auction this year will be October 9, 2010.
